Experiential & Service Learning

Corpus Christi College offers numerous opportunities for you to gain volunteer and work experience, both on and off campus.

Build your personal profile, beef up your resume, and make new connections.  These opportunities allow you to expand your network and gain real-world, on-the-job experience.

Service Learning

‘Service Learning’ is a pedagogy of teaching and learning that enhances in-class instruction with meaningful community-based experiences.  Meaning or finding purpose is the result of developing relationships that are built upon trust; that encourage reciprocal dialogue and understanding about different cultures, different faith traditions, and different life experiences; and that foster partnerships through the spirit of collaboration.

Service Learning programs immerse students in community settings to build meaningful relationships and develop new insights about various cultures and faith traditions.

Co-Curricular Record Program

Corpus Christi College has launched a Co-Curricular Record (CCR) Program through the Career Development Centre.  The CCR Program allows students to have their experiences documented on an official post-secondary record.  The purpose of the record is to highlight and validate student learning that happens outside of the classroom and document it in an official way.  The CCR creates credibility for the students’ experiences that can be used when applying for future schools or jobs.

Experiential Learning Terminology

  • Co-operative Education (Co-op)

Co-op is a type of internship program that enables college students to receive career training with pay as they work with professionals in their major fields of study. Work experience in government, business, industry, and human services enhances the students' academic training. Students who participate in co-ops stop taking classes to work full time.

  • Internship

An Internship is an opportunity that employers offer to students interested in gaining work experience in particular industries, with or without pay in order to gain work experience or satisfy requirements for a qualification or program. Internships provide the opportunity for observation and practical, hands on learning experiences in a particular industry.

  • Pre-Practicum

A Pre-Practicum (or preservice teaching) is a period of guided, supervised teaching for students interested in teaching as a profession. The college student is gradually introduced into the teaching role for a particular class by a mentor or cooperating teacher. The Pre-Practicum experience is a precursor to Student Teaching. Pre-Practicum Students will be observing, getting to know students and learning styles, and participating by micro-teaching and working with individual students or small groups

  • Volunteer

Volunteers contribute time, effort and talent to a need or cause without pay. Volunteers choose to act in recognition of a mission, with an attitude of social responsibility, going beyond one's basic obligations. Volunteering jobs are often more flexible and allow students the opportunity to discover their passions and interests while gaining employable soft and hard skills.

  • Work Study

Qualified students who exhibit financial need may be eligible to participate in on-campus employment.
“Work Study” allows students the opportunity to earn money while gaining hands on, practical experience working an on-campus job. If you demonstrate financial need and have applied for a student loan, you may be eligible for Work Study employment. Work Study jobs will vary depending on skill and interest.
