Frequently Asked Questions

Answers for International Students

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

For up-to-date information on study permits, please refer to the Immigration and Citizenship website from the Government of Canada.

What documents do I need to provide prior to studying in Canada?

You will need to provide:
    i) a valid passport to apply for a study permit,
ii) admission letter from Corpus Christi College,
iii) proof of funds adequate to support you in Canada,
iv) a valid study permit, and
    v) a temporary resident visas (TRV) and electronic travel authorization (ETA).

All international students in programs longer than 6 months need a valid study permit. Applications for a study permit can take up to 3 months, so apply as soon as possible. You are responsible for ensuring your study permit is valid at all times. Review study permit processing times and required documents for your study permit application. In addition, only citizens of certain countries require a TRV, also known as an entry visa. Check the IRCC website to see if you need a valid TRV to travel to Canada. If you are from a TRV-exempt country, you may need to apply for an eTA before you can travel to Canada.

I am a new student. Can I apply for my study permit now?

Yes. As soon as you are admitted to Corpus Christi College, you should apply online for an initial study permit so that you are in the queue for processing. After you apply, you may be asked to submit biometrics (photo and fingerprints), complete a medical exam, or provide other documents which may not be possible to do right now, but we are confident that Immigration will account for these delays and will process study permits as quickly as possible. The current travel restrictions will not prevent your study permit application from being processed.

I am a new student and my study application is still in process. What should I do?

IRCC continues to process applications submitted online, even if the Visa Application Centre in your country may be closed. On July 14, 2020, IRCC announced temporary policy changes to facilitate online learning for international students.

Check with your local Visa Application Centre for details on your application and make sure to keep up to date on COVID-19 updates in your country and in Canada. A study permit is not required to take online courses from abroad. Students can count the time spent pursuing their studies online abroad toward their eligibility for a post-graduation work permit, if they submit a study permit before the program starts. For full details, see how your PGWP eligibility is affected.

Are there scholarships that I can apply for as an international student?

Currently we don’t have scholarships for international students.

What are the housing options as an international student?

As an international student at Corpus Christi College, you can either stay at the Carey Centre or at St. Andrew’s Hall, located just steps away from the College. The cost to live at the Carey Centre is $12,950 plus a $300 refundable damage deposit. The cost to live at St. Andrew’s Hall varies. For a co-ed quad, it is $936/month; for a studio, it is $1,282/month; for a one-bedroom, it is $1,449/month; for a two-bedroom, it is $2,229/month, and for a townhouse (2 bedroom + den), it is $2,048/month.

Please note that these costs are reflective of the Fall 2021 term. For the most up-to-date information, please visit the links below:

2020–2021 Funding Priority: Technology Upgrades

High quality teaching and learning must be supported by the latest education technology. Technology upgrades will enhance learning environments for students on campus and expand our ability to offer courses outside of the lower mainland.

Over the past three years, the cost of keeping our classrooms running has increased significantly due to aging technology, equipment and the need to provide more technical supports to faculty and students. We are currently undergoing a significant construction project to renew our aging campus by enhancing spaces for our students to ensure better classroom and student life experiences. As a result of these renovations a new long-term technology plan has been developed which will be integrated into electrical upgrades and renovations of classrooms.

The rebuilt classrooms will be modernized with fixed seating and desks with built-in plugs for electronics. Creston technology systems would be added to control all aspects of the classroom environment from screens and IT, to lighting and equipment to provide long-distance education opportunities.

Learning spaces are no longer limited to the four walls of a classroom

A multitude of tools are available for distance learners to experience class, collaborate, and share information in real-time, without regard for geographical distance. Cutting-edge, dynamic technologies facilitate videoconferencing with high-quality audio and video, lecture recording, streaming video, and remote presentation from any of the connected laptops or mobile devices.

Mission and Vision

Corpus Christi pursues its mission through our undergraduate program in the humanities.

Speak to an Advisor

Every student at Corpus Christi College has an advisor

Academic Advising is an integral part of student success at Corpus Christi College. We pride ourselves on being a student-first institution, and one of the chief methods this mission is carried out is by is the level of service and care our advisors give to students. This support leads to student confidence with the goal that they feel empowered to take ownership of their education and carry this with them as they move on to a bachelor’s degree or as graduates of our Associate of Arts program.

This means that along with the “nuts and bolts” of academic advising regarding course planning, program requirements, etc., our advisors are committed to offering holistic, “360-degree” advising. This is in recognition that post-secondary education is difficult and that there can be a varying number of factors that can affect a student’s academic wellbeing. Our advisors engage in active listening, offer words of encouragement, and help students identify resources and support that can help them.

Academic Advisors

Students can contact Academic Advisors directly via email to set up appointments or send general inquiries.

Academic Advising also assists students via email or phone if appropriate. Appointments are preferred for questions or concerns that require more extensive discussion.

What can your advisor help you with?

Academic Advisors primarily assist students via private appointments, either by booking or drop-in. During these appointments, advisors can help with things like:
  • Course Planning
Advisors help students achieve clarity on their interests, passions and goals and assist in choosing the right courses to help students towards completion of their desired program. This can either be a degree program offered at Corpus Christi College, or transfer to another post-secondary institution (such as UBC).
  • General Academic Guidance
Advisors answer questions pertaining to program/degree requirements, transfer information, application deadlines, personal profile building, and more.
  • Academic Coaching
Advisors help students examine academic concerns and barriers to academic success and provide support in overcoming these issues through conversation and a variety of resources, including (but not limited to) the Student Resource Centre at Corpus Christi College and UBC campus resources (all of which Corpus Christi students have access to).
  • Issues and Concerns within your Courses
Within courses, advisors can provide support and guidance on how to navigate challenging situations or problems that might arise regarding attendance, performance, policy issues, and more. Outside of courses, advisors can provide support and guidance if a student has health, wellness, or other issues, with proper referral to appropriate resources and with full understanding that life outside academics has a significant impact on academic success.

Academic Advising Workshops and Info Sessions

Academic Advising hosts a series of workshops and info sessions throughout the academic year in order to further student success and help students prepare for their future. Invitations are sent to students via the student newsletter, email and the Academic Calendar. These include:

  • 1st-Year Introductory Group Advising Sessions

These sessions are held at the beginning of each semester and are aimed at new incoming students to Corpus Christi-St. Mark’s (though open to all students). Sessions focus on general information that will lead to academic success. Topics such as study tips, degree/program information, transfer information and important dates are discussed and are separated between Arts, Business and Science paths.

  • Post-Secondary Transfer Workshop

This workshop is focused on transfer information and how to effectively use the BC Transfer Guide so students can learn how to keep track of their own transfer requirements.

  • Personal Profile Building Workshop

This workshop is intended for those students who wish to transfer to a program outside of Corpus Christi College that requires a Personal Profile. At Corpus, this is primarily aimed (but not limited) to students who are hoping to transfer to UBC Sauder School of Business or SFU Beedie School of Business. Advisors use their expertise in helping students understand the purpose of the personal profile and how to effectively write about their experiences. Personal Profiles are an extremely important part of the admissions equation when it comes to applications to the programs mentioned above.

  • Post-Secondary Info Sessions

Throughout the academic year, Academic Advising invites recruiters/advisors from other post-secondary institutions to talk about their programs and application processes, and to give students an opportunity to familiarize themselves with other institutions and ask questions.

  • Course Planning Workshop

This workshop is held in August and is aimed at helping first-year students with general advice on course planning. While this workshop does not replace 1-on-1 specific course planning with a student, it explains enough of the basic knowledge to help a student understand what to look out for and how to get started.

Fair Warning

The Fair Warning period is an important part of our advising programming.

After interim grades have been submitted, advisors reach out to students who have 60% or below in their courses. This provides students the opportunity to assess their academic situation and receive support from their advisor. The Fair Warning period is conducted the week before the semester’s withdrawal deadline, which gives students the opportunity to potentially pursue options that avoid a negative mark on their transcript. Students on Fair Warning benefit greatly from a discussion with their advisor on their academic progress and discuss any changes that may be necessary for student success.

Academic Success Program

The Academic Success program is designed to help students on Academic Probation receive support and assist them in regaining good Academic Standing. Students on Academic Probation are automatically enrolled in this program. Academic Advisors are responsible for providing assistance through the obligations of the program by assisting students with degree and program planning and with course selection, as well as by helping students understand College policies. As well, Advisors are the main source of support for students regarding issues, concerns and general academic well-being.

Students enrolled in the Academic Success Program must commit to completing all required components, including the following two main components:
  • 1) Mandatory Regular Meetings with your Academic Advisor
  • 2) Mandatory Referral to the Student Resource Centre
Students remain in the Academic Success Program until they regain good Academic Standing.

Note on Academic Probation:

Academic Probation is defined by a student having a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or below. Academic Probation is officially noted on a student’s permanent statement of grades (transcript). Students on academic probation may not receive permission to take an overload of more than 5 courses. Additionally, students with a cumulative GPA of 1.0 or less will have their course load maximum set at 3 courses. Once a student’s cumulative GPA rises above 2.0, they will be taken off Academic Probation and return to good academic standing.

Supporting Students

In your role as a faculty or staff member, you may encounter students in distress or in need of support. Use this information as a guide to help you better support and care for students.

Where to Begin

  • Assisting Students in Distress

    Recognize signs of distress
You may be the first person to see signs that a student is in distress or they may come to you specifically for help. Use this folder to familiarize yourself with common signs of distress, from mild to severe, and the steps you can take to offer assistance.

    Reach out and refer
Your role is not to diagnose or treat students, but you are in a position to make them aware of the help available. Early intervention plays a key role in helping students get back on track.

    Access expert advice when needed
There may be times when you need more advice about how to support a student in distress. For more severe and urgent concerns, you can consult with:

  • Having a conversation with a student in distress

    1. If you’ve reached out to the student
    • Be specific about the signs and behaviours that you’ve noticed (i.e., "I've noticed you've missed the last two midterms.")
    • Express your concern (i.e., "I am concerned and wanted to check in to see how you're doing.")
    • Reassure the student, who may be struggling, that it's 100% OK to reach out for help from UBC faculty and staff

If a student doesn't want help...
    • Respect their decision. Accepting or refusing assistance must be left up to the student, except in emergencies
    • Don’t force the issue or pressure them into going to a referred resource
    • Try to leave room for reconsideration later on (i.e., "If you change your mind you can always access the resources I've provided to you." )

    2. Respond with empathy and normalize stress
    • Listen actively to help the student feel heard and understood (i.e., "It sounds like you're facing a lot of difficulties in your life right now.")
    • When stress seems related to academic pressures, acknowledge that stress is a normal part of the university experience

    3. Ask open-ended questions. Giving students an opportunity to talk often has a calming effect and helps to clarify their concerns:
    • What have you tried so far?
    • What do you think the main challenge is?
    • Do you have the support that you need?

    4. Discuss Resource Options
    • Point out that help is available; while seeking help can feel difficult, it is a sign of strength
    • Provide the student with information about resources and support
    • Encourage the student to identify the next steps they plan to take

Connect to Resources

  • Imminent risk of harm

    Examples
    • Active thoughts of suicide with a plan or suicide attempt
    • Behaviour that is violent, destructive, aggressive, or threatening to self or others

    Steps to take:
    1. Take student to the nearest hospital – Call 911
    2. Call UBC Campus Security: 604-822-2222

  • High level of distress

    Examples
    • Deterioration in personal appearance and hygiene and significant impairment with daily tasks
    • Expressions of severe hopelessness or references to suicide
    • Self-harm behaviour such as recent cutting or hitting, severely restricted eating with weight loss/severe binge eating
    • Substance use concerns
    • Loss of touch with reality/severely disorganized thinking
    • Physical health concerns

One of KCI's most successful and experienced consultants, with 25 years in fundraising, Jo-Anne Nykilchyk is highly skilled in donor cultivation and solicitation, volunteer training and management, campaign strategy development and direction and major gift fundraising.

Since joining the firm in 1996, Ms. Nykilchyk has distinguished herself by leading a number of highly successful campaigns including a $50 million capital campaign for Acadia University.

Previously, Ms. Nykilchyk was responsible for the start up phase of a $60-$100 million capital campaign for William Osler Health Centre, one of the largest community health care centres in Canada.  She also assisted with the initiation of a major gift fundraising program.

Ms. Nykilchyk completed a $42-million appeal for the Waterloo Region Hospitals Foundation, which surpassed its goal by more than $1 million. Under her direction this campaign received a large number of major gifts, the most notable of which was a $5-million donation from a single individual. Prior to this project, she headed up a $6-million campaign for Alberta's Red Deer College, which exceeded its goal by $1.5 million.

During her time with KCI, Ms. Nykilchyk directed the start-up phase of a $3-million capital campaign for St. Peter's Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, and a $15-million campaign for Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Quebec, which exceeded its goal by more than $1.5 million.

Prior to joining KCI, Ms. Nykilchyk was development officer for the faculties of Applied Science and Law at the University of British Columbia where she developed and implemented integrated, comprehensive fundraising programs for both faculties, with major gift fundraising as her primary focus.

As development director at Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation in Bathurst, New Brunswick, from 1992 to 1994, Ms. Nykilchyk completed a $2- million equipment campaign, which included managing more than 400 volunteers.  She also successfully directed the foundation's transition from conducting a capital campaign to developing and implementing an annual fundraising program, which included a planned giving program, a past-patient mailing initiative, diverse special events and establishing an in-memoriam program.

Previously, Ms. Nykilchyk worked with another national consulting firm where she led capital campaigns for Chaleur Regional Hospital Foundation and the North Bay and District Health Centre Foundation in North Bay, Ontario.

A graduate of the University of Waterloo, Ms. Nykilchyk holds an Honours BA in Political Science. A Certified Fund Raising Executive and accredited member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, she continues to enhance her skills through a wide variety of professional development courses and seminars.

Emily Dionisio graduated from Holy Cross Regional High in 2011. After graduating she pursued her dream of becoming a Fashion Designer where she completed her diploma in Fashion Design and Marketing at the Art Institute of Vancouver (AI) in 2013. During her time in high school and at AI, Emily remained active in her youth group, the Couples for Christ-Youth ministry where she served her community for 5 years. She became an active leader planning and leading youth camps and events.

While pursuing her dream and continuing to serve her community, in 2012 Emily applied to a program in her ministry to discern missionary work. She continued working in the fashion industry while serving and actively discerning. After 4 years of discernment Emily felt that both fashion and missionary work was not for her at the time. In October 2017, Emily joined the Colleges where she found her mission working with joy and purpose in the Development Office.

As a hobby Emily continues her dream of designing and now specializes in creating custom-design wedding and mantilla veils.

Kathryn (Kat) Ryan was born in Vancouver BC and graduated from Lord Byng Secondary school in 2013. After High School, Kathryn attended Corpus Christi College for two years before transferring to UBC to complete her baccalaureate degree in Psychology. During her time at Corpus Christi, she was an active volunteer serving as the Special Events Coordinator on the Corpus Christi Student Union, as well as helping serve food for those living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside through Curbside Outreach.  Another fond memory she has during her time at Corpus was participating in the Rose Prince Pilgrimage in Northern B.C. creating long lasting friendships.

Passionate about sharing her positive experience at Corpus and bringing people together, Kathryn is thrilled to be the Alumni Relations Support Officer and hopes to bring alumni back to their alma mater and stay connected. She started in her role in October 2018 part time while completing her studies at UBC, transitioning into full time after she graduated.

It is her great honour to be a part of an institution with tremendous growth, and to be in a position to reconnect past alumni to the Colleges.

Dear Donor,

I am the fortunate recipient of the Archbishop’s Award and I wanted to thank you for funding this scholarship. When deciding what school to go to, I was torn over which one to choose. The scholarship is what pushed me to choose Corpus Christi, and I haven’t looked back.

I have grown to love the College community, and in the past year I have grown both academically and spiritually.  Through the College’s Leadership Program, I was able to volunteer with various outreach programs to help the less fortunate, as well as start a program to tutor young refugees to improve their English and Math skills. Thanks to the scholarship, I have been able to work less and devote more time to volunteering.

With a sense of deep gratitude, I would like to thank you for your investment in the College and in me.  I hope that one day I will be able to give back to the College to help other students reach their educational goals.

Sincerely, Nicholas

English Bridge Program for EAL Students

Become a Successful University Student in Canada

Corpus Christi College's English Bridge Program is designed to help English as an Additional Language (EAL) students become successful university students.

Our Bridge Program helps you improve your English proficiency so you’re ready for the next step in your post-secondary studies.

What is Involved?

The Bridge Program is an intensive 12-week program (144 hours) that equips students with the necessary language and academic skills they need for university level courses.

How the Program Works

The Program integrates four academic language skills:
1.    Listening
2.    Reading
3.    Speaking
4.    Writing

These skills are integrated by helping students develop their Receptive Skills (such as Listening and Reading) in one course while practicing their Productive Skills (such as Speaking and Writing) in another.

Students will also apply their skills to engage in critical thinking, academic research, presentations, and discussions.

Is the Program Right for You?

Do you have a good academic record and an intermediate-level skill in English from your high school years?

Are you pursuing a post-secondary degree (Associate, Bachelor’s) but struggling to enter into first-year university programs or English courses because of a lower-than-expected IELTs score?

Do you meet Corpus Christi College’s academic admissions requirements, but not the English Language Admissions Standard?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, then this program is right for you.

BENEFITS OF THE ENGLISH BRIDGE PROGRAM

•    improve your English and academic language skills
•    receive dedicated teaching in a supportive environment
•    learn successful study habits and test strategies
•    prepare yourself for the rigors and discipline of university level courses that require academic research, critical thinking, and essay writing

Enjoy a unique experience

•    make friends, experience Canadian culture, and practice English with native speakers
•    fully integrate into College life as you study and socialize with your peers and instructors
•    engage socially through extracurricular activities at Corpus Christi College and UBC

Course Details

Program instructors use a communicative approach with their students to help them build the Academic Language Skills necessary for successful post-secondary academic research, critical thinking, essay writing, and presentations.

Students will progress through a combined series of Listening-Reading and Speaking-Writing Courses:

Bridge Program: Listening and Reading
Students study and practice academic listening and reading skills, including noting and comparing key ideas, discerning and critiquing thesis statements, making outlines, paraphrasing sentences, summarizing paragraphs, and analyzing essays.

Bridge Program: Speaking and Writing
Students study and practice academic speaking and writing skills, including brainstorming key ideas, formulating and writing thesis statements, outlining and structuring paragraphs, drafting essays, producing and revising drafts, and presenting content.

Students will also apply their skills to engage in critical thinking, academic research, presentations, and discussions.

ELIGIBILITY AND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

International Peer Mentorship Program

The International Peer Mentorship program at Corpus Christi College is a peer-mentorship initiative to support new international students, connect Canadian and international students, and give returning students a leadership opportunity.

New international students (mentees) are paired with returning domestic student (mentors) to support and learn from each other. Working in tandem with Academic Advising and the Student Life office, peer mentors will be a source of support for meeting new people, building networks and experiencing Canadian culture.

Be a Mentee (new international students)

At Corpus Christi College, we really want you to be involved the community because we care about your well-being. We are committed to supporting international students with social and cultural experiences to facilitate their academic success and personal achievements at Corpus Christi College. To aid in your success, we are excited to provide the opportunity for international students to be members of our International Peer Mentorship program.

Peer mentors are a valuable resource in providing a student’s perspective of post-secondary life and they look forward to sharing their knowledge, experiences, challenges and insights with you.

Your peer mentor may be your partner when we organize social activities such as watching the Vancouver White Caps soccer games, celebrating at the Fall Thanksgiving BBQ, cheering for the UBC Thunderbirds football team and many more opportunities.

All international students receive a letter with information in the International Peer Mentorship program. For more information, contact Antonio Daling at [email protected]

Be a Mentor (returning domestic students)

All new students have to make adjustments to be successful at university. On top of adjusting to academic life, international students may also be adjusting to quirks of Canadian culture, being 1000s of kilometers away from their families and newfound independence.

As an International Peer Mentor you will work as part of a team and independently to support international students with social and cultural experiences to facilitate their academic success and personal achievements at Corpus Christi College.

The learning won’t just be one way! Your mentee will teach you about their culture, open your eyes to exciting new foods and give you valuable experience working with international communities.

How to apply
To apply, please send your resume and a letter of intent to [email protected] or drop off the application documents to the Career Centre.

Your Best Start to University

Why is Corpus Christi College your best start for university?

UNPARALLED LOCATION

Corpus Christi College is just steps to UBC, 10 minutes to downtown Vancouver, 20 minutes to the North Shore Mountains, less than 2 hours to Whistler; and a short ferry ride to Victoria. Students who live here can ski in the morning and relax on the beach in the afternoon!

Because our College is just a few steps to UBC - ranked among the top 20 public universities in the world - our students can take advantage of all that a large research institution has to offer, including many services and amenities.
Vancouver has a huge network of bike paths, running areas, and hiking trails to keep you moving. You can ski in the morning, go to the beach or kayak in the afternoon, and much, much more.

WE OFFER THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Our students enjoy all the perks of an intimate learning environment, plus all the services and amenities of a big university campus at UBC.

Our average class size is approximately 20, and the majority of our classes have under 35 students, compared to classes of 300 to 500 students at the major Canadian universities. This means professors get to know students by name, and are able to offer one-on-one guidance

Our diverse student population is composed of approximately 80% local students, while international students, representing a broad array of cultures, traditions, account for the remaining 20%.

WE INVEST IN STUDENT SUCCESS WITH TANGIBLE RESOURCES AND SKILLS BUILDING.

All of our students are assigned their own academic advisor for individual attention. They can also access the Student Resource Center, Student Development and Campus Ministry for personal, social and spiritual support .

We help our students build a portfolio of work experience, internships, volunteer roles, and professional skills to make them more employable and successful.
Our faculty and staff are committed to helping our students fulfill their career goals. We don’t expect them to have it all figured out when they arrive, but by the time they leave, they’ll have a solid plan.

The Catholic Colleges at UBC need your strong support – now more than ever.

Funding Challenge

Unlike Colleges like Langara, and universities like UBC and SFU, Catholic Colleges are not eligible for provincial government funding in British Columbia. Elementary and secondary schools do receive partial funding, but Catholic higher education does not.

We count on the generosity of our sponsors and donors to make Catholic higher education in Vancouver not only a reality, but also accessible to as many students as possible.

We are committed to affordable and accessible post-secondary education and offer scholarships, bursaries, and grants to help ensure no deserving student will be turned away from pursuing their academic aspirations.

“From the moment he began his studies at Corpus Christi College, my son was met with enthusiasm, welcome and warmth. I believe that the smaller classes, the personalized attention from professors and academic advisors and access to the resources and amenities of the University of British Columbia are the key to enabling students to succeed.”

—Susana Metcalfe, parent of Corpus Christi alumnus who successfully transferred to UBC

Fundraising Priorities

Catholic/Christian Experience

A key priority is to integrate higher education with personal and faith development reflected in areas of academic formation, leadership development, and service to others. Our goal is to inspire our students to make a hopeful and constructive contribution that will make a difference in today’s world.

Academic Programs

A key priority is to develop reflective, lifelong learners by providing rigorous academic programing and solid intellectual formation. Our goal is to imbue our students with critical thinking skills guided by faith and morals so they are prepared to meet the challenges of their academic and professional lives.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

A key priority is to provide essential scholarships and bursaries to help us to attract some of the brightest young people as they graduate from BC’s high schools, and also ensure money doesn’t stand in the way of needy, deserving students from all walks of life.

Public Engagement and Outreach

A key priority is to foster encounter and dialogue with Catholics and non-Catholics alike on the UBC campus, in the Lower Mainland, and across the province, on the important issues and critical challenges of our time.

“It’s a pleasure for me to affirm once again my personal support and that of the Archdiocese to the great cause of Catholic higher education in our local Church. St. Mark’s College and Corpus Christi College, under the able and proven leadership of Dr. Peter Meehan, are essential not just to the well-being and vibrancy of the Catholic Church, but to the wider community as well.

Vancouver Catholics are extraordinarily generous people to whom has fallen the task of truly ‘building up the Church’ spiritually but also materially. This task continues. I hope that you will join me in ensuring that the Colleges will ‘be at the forefront of the Church’s dialogue with culture’ and the modern world.”

—J. Michael Miller, CSB, Archbishop of Vancouver

Experiential & Service Learning

Corpus Christi College offers numerous opportunities for you to gain volunteer and work experience, both on and off campus.

Build your personal profile, beef up your resume, and make new connections.  These opportunities allow you to expand your network and gain real-world, on-the-job experience.

Service Learning

‘Service Learning’ is a pedagogy of teaching and learning that enhances in-class instruction with meaningful community-based experiences.  Meaning or finding purpose is the result of developing relationships that are built upon trust; that encourage reciprocal dialogue and understanding about different cultures, different faith traditions, and different life experiences; and that foster partnerships through the spirit of collaboration.

Service Learning programs immerse students in community settings to build meaningful relationships and develop new insights about various cultures and faith traditions.

Co-Curricular Record Program

Corpus Christi College has launched a Co-Curricular Record (CCR) Program through the Career Development Centre.  The CCR Program allows students to have their experiences documented on an official post-secondary record.  The purpose of the record is to highlight and validate student learning that happens outside of the classroom and document it in an official way.  The CCR creates credibility for the students’ experiences that can be used when applying for future schools or jobs.

Experiential Learning Terminology

  • Co-operative Education (Co-op)

Co-op is a type of internship program that enables college students to receive career training with pay as they work with professionals in their major fields of study. Work experience in government, business, industry, and human services enhances the students' academic training. Students who participate in co-ops stop taking classes to work full time.

  • Internship

An Internship is an opportunity that employers offer to students interested in gaining work experience in particular industries, with or without pay in order to gain work experience or satisfy requirements for a qualification or program. Internships provide the opportunity for observation and practical, hands on learning experiences in a particular industry.

  • Pre-Practicum

A Pre-Practicum (or preservice teaching) is a period of guided, supervised teaching for students interested in teaching as a profession. The college student is gradually introduced into the teaching role for a particular class by a mentor or cooperating teacher. The Pre-Practicum experience is a precursor to Student Teaching. Pre-Practicum Students will be observing, getting to know students and learning styles, and participating by micro-teaching and working with individual students or small groups

  • Volunteer

Volunteers contribute time, effort and talent to a need or cause without pay. Volunteers choose to act in recognition of a mission, with an attitude of social responsibility, going beyond one's basic obligations. Volunteering jobs are often more flexible and allow students the opportunity to discover their passions and interests while gaining employable soft and hard skills.

  • Work Study

Qualified students who exhibit financial need may be eligible to participate in on-campus employment.
“Work Study” allows students the opportunity to earn money while gaining hands on, practical experience working an on-campus job. If you demonstrate financial need and have applied for a student loan, you may be eligible for Work Study employment. Work Study jobs will vary depending on skill and interest.

Paying for My Education

Tuition rates at Corpus Christi College are competitive with other public universities in British Columbia.

Understanding Your Costs

It's important to understand the costs associated with your post-secondary education and budget accordingly for your scenario.

Use the Financial Planning and Budget worksheets below to calculate the cost of your education and determine how you will pay for school.
insert_drive_fileSample Worksheet    insert_drive_fileBlank Worksheet
Every student’s situation is unique. See below for a variety of scenarios when planning your budget. Explore our Financial Aid and Scholarship options for more information on how to pay for school!

Scenarios

  • I will be living with my parents

    Things to consider

    • A great option because living away from home can be expensive.
    • By utilizing the Success Program services, you can save on monthly transportation costs.
• Access the Corpus Christi College app and connect with students to find ride-sharing options.

In addition to tuition and fees, you can expect to pay for

    • Bus pass or gas
    • Textbooks
    • Meals & snacks
    • Entertainment

  • I want to live on campus

    Things to consider

    • Corpus Christi College is a commuter campus and therefore does not provide residence to students.
    • The College recommends seeking housing at Carey Centre or at St. Andrew’s Hall, but we cannot guarantee our students housing at these residences.
    • Contact these residences and be persistent. Students often change their mind or find other housing before September, so even if it seems like there is no vacancy, a room may become available at the end of August or beginning of September.

In addition to tuition and fees, you can expect to pay for

    • Textbooks
    • Room & board
    • Cell phone
    • Entertainment

  • I want to live on my own

    Things to consider

    • Living on your own is expensive. You have to pay rent, buy and prepare your own food, do your laundry, pay your bills, etc. All of which can become very stressful if you are not careful with your money.
    • Build your financial knowledge at The Money Belt.
    • By assessing your financial situation, developing a budget and spending your money wisely, you will be keeping your stress levels in check which will allow you to remain focused on your studies. After all you are still a full-time college student.

In addition to tuition and fees, you can expect to pay for

    • Bus pass or gas
    • Textbooks
    • Rent
    • Food

(What you buy and how often you eat out determines how much you will spend on food.)
    • Cell Phone
    • Household items

    • Entertainment
    • Other expenses

FAQ

1

What is university transfer and how does it work?

Most Bachelor Degree programs offered at universities require 120 credits. Up to 60 of those credits (generally first and second year courses) can be taken at another post-secondary institution. Corpus Christi College offers transfer eligible courses that enable students to take up to 60 credits that can transfer to the Bachelor’s Degree program of their choice at another university. It is important to note that not only do you have to have the correct number of course credits, you must also attain a certain GPA to enter the university of your choice.

Please ensure you know the application deadlines, GPA, and credit/program/graduation requirements for the university of your choice. You can usually discover these on their respective websites. If you would like further clarity, please book an appointment with an academic advisor.

2

How many course credits must I have in order to qualify for transfer?

Students need at least 24 transferrable credits in order to transfer in to university. Typically, a student transferring in to 2nd year university has 24-30 credits. If a student has at least 24 credits, then they their admittance will only be based on their college academics. If a student has less than 24 credits, then their applications will be grouped in with high school applications.

It is important to keep in mind that you are only allowed a maximum of 60 transferrable credits to your university of choice as universities require students to complete at least half of their degree at the university.

3

How do I know which courses are transferable to my desired university?

It is paramount to ensure that that the courses you are taking are transferrable to your desired university. The best and easiest way to do this is to visit BC Transfer Guide. By using the tools on this website, you are able to search if the course you are taking here at Corpus Christi will transfer to your desired university.

[info]If you would like assistance with learning how to use the BC Transfer Guide website, please book an appointment with one of our academic advisors.[/info]

4

What if I want to transfer my courses to universities outside of BC/Canada/North America?

If you are interested in transferring to a University out of the province or country, then the best way to see if your courses will transfer is to contact the admissions department at your desired university. This is done at a course by course basis, and they will most likely ask for course syllabi to determine transfer eligibility.

5

Which courses should I take?

That is entirely up to you! We encourage you to explore your interests when deciding which courses to take. If you’re still in the process of discovering your passions, then it’s a good idea to try a variety of different courses. If you have a specific program/university in mind, then it is best plan your course selection around the requirements for that program, along with any pre-requisites you might need to take. The requirements and pre-requisites are almost always listed on each university’s website.

If you need assistance with course selection, please don’t hesitate to book an appointment with an academic advisor.

6

Do I have to earn all my transfer credits within 2 years before transferring before transferring in to year 3 of a particular program?

There is a common misconception that students have to complete their credits within a certain time frame, whether it be for transfer or for graduation. That is simply not true! While it is definitely possible to finish your transfer credits in 2 years in order to transfer in to year 3 of your chosen university, you can actually take as much time as you need. It all depends on what type of course load is right for you.

7

What is the difference between a full-time schedule and a part-time schedule?

A full time schedule is a course load of 3 or more courses in one semester. This will qualify you as a full-time student. Anything less than that qualifies as a part-time student.

8

What happens if the course I want to take is full?

You can sign up for the waitlist through MyLION. If a spot in the class becomes available, you will automatically be enrolled.

9

Can I retake a course that I’ve passed but done poorly in?

Per our school policy, students who pass a course are ineligible to take it again. This rule is firm and no exceptions will be made.

10

Can I take courses at another institution while studying at Corpus?

Yes, you can. You will require a letter of permission first however. You can request one through your MyLION account. It is highly advised to book an appointment with an academic advisor before you enrol in courses outside of Corpus Christi. They can assist you in managing your course selection and course load.

11

I am a student at another institution. Am I eligible to take courses at Corpus Christi College?

Yes, you are! You will be considered a visiting student here at Corpus Christi College. However, you will have to check with your program and ask them for a letter of permission in order to take courses at an institution outside of your own.

If you have any questions with regards to a specific course you are interested in, please contact the professor. The Main Office will be able to put you in contact with the correct professor.

12

What happens if I fail a class?

If a student fails a class, it will be entered in to their transcript as a “Fail” and the student will not receive credit for that course. Their cumulative GPA will also be lowered, which puts the student at risk for Academic Probation. If you fail a course, you are eligible to take it again. If you are struggling academically, it is advised schedule an appointment with an academic advisor.

13

How does an online course work?

An online course at Corpus Christi College is a full credit academic course that has no classroom component. The entirety of the course materials are distributed online by the professor and it is up to the student to complete the course work as planned by the professor. Communication with the professor will be done either during office hours, or online. There will be scheduled examinations that will happen on campus. It is advised that students taking an online course study on campus where there will be less distractions as well as access to peer support.

Donating publicly traded securities directly to Corpus Christi College - rather than donating the cash proceeds from their sale – may provide substantial tax savings. In the May 2, 2006 federal budget, the government eliminated the capital gains tax on donations of securities or shares. This means even more tax savings for donors. Corpus Christi College can accept both electronic and certificate shares, as well as gifts of publicly traded options. If you choose this gift type, you will receive a donation receipt for the fair market value of the gift.

  • Gifts in Kind

    Gifts in Kind

A gift-in-kind is a non-cash donation. Gifts-in-kind includes items such as personal effects, artwork and real estate. Corpus Christi College may accept a gift-in-kind as a charitable donation if the item is consistent with the College’s mission, goals, and priorities. Tax receipts for the fair market price are issued after the gift has been appraised, on items valued over $1,000. The appraiser must be acting at arm’s length for either the donor or Corpus Christi College.

  • Tribute Gifts

    Tribute Gifts

A tribute gift to Corpus Christi College in memory or in honour of a special person or event is a thoughtful recognition or remembrance and meaningful way to support Corpus Christi College. A memorial gift is a lasting tribute to honour the memory of someone dearly loved. A gift in honour of someone can celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday, wedding, retirement, graduation, new job, Christmas, or any other special event. You can choose to designate your gift to any of our programs, while enriching a wonderful educational experience for students. We can assist you to establish a named scholarship through a memorial gift or gift in honor.

  • Planned Gifts

    Planned Gifts

Planned gifts are charitable donations deferred into the future or to the time of one’s passing. Planned gifts give back, allowing you to take advantage of sizeable income, capital gains, and estate deductions on your taxes. Planned gifts have unique tax implications and we would be pleased to work with you to ensure your best interests are considered when creating a planned gift. The following are examples of planned giving opportunities:
    • Charitable remainder trusts
    • Bequests and wills
    • Insurance policies
    • Gift plus annuity plans
    • Gifts of residual interests
    • Gifts of RRIFs and RRSPs

  • Endowment Gifts

    Endowment Gifts

Designed to build and secure the future financial stability, endowment gifts are permanent trusts. While the capital of the endowment is preserved in perpetuity, the investment income generates income revenue. Gifts of any size help build our current endowment. A named endowment may be contributed over several years and designated for a special project that is meaningful to the donor.

  • Major and Capital Gifts

    Major and Capital Gifts

In support of the expansion and/or improvement of the physical campus, major and capital gifts last for generations. Past gifts have enabled modest improvement of the main building, library, chapel, and technology. All of these factors help us attract and retain students as well as faculty. For the last 16 years, Corpus Christi delivers many of its programs out of St. Mark’s College, a building that dates back to 1958. Through thoughtful conversion of a limited footprint, three classrooms have now been converted to five classrooms. In order to continue to meet the needs of a growing student population, additional space is needed!

As with other buildings and schools within the Archdiocese of Vancouver, St. Mark’s College commissioned a Conceptual Seismic Upgrade Structural Report to determine structural capacity in the event of a major earthquake. The study reveals a $4million cost for the upgrade. A capital plan is underway to address the building and infrastructure requirements.

  • Corporate Matching

Corporate Matching – Double the Donation

Employees are often encouraged to contribute to charitable organizations in their community through the creation of matching gift programs. These programs allow companies to match all donations to eligible non-profit organizations like Corpus Christi College. As a result of matching gift programs, your donation can have twice the impact on our campus and in the lives of our students.

Contact your human resources department to find out if your employer can help your gift have twice the impact. They will provide you with the necessary information and forms to apply for this unique program.

  • Payroll Deduction for Corpus Christi College Staff and Faculty

Payroll Deduction for Corpus Christi College Staff and Faculty

Faculty and staff members may choose to make gifts via bi-monthly payroll contributions. Payroll contributions are an easy way to support Corpus Christi College students and to enhance programs. Ongoing payroll contributions are noted on your T4 at the end of the year for income tax purposes.

  • Tax Deductible Donations for US Residents

Tax Deductible Donations for US Residents

We are pleased to be able to offer friends residing in the United States the opportunity to make a tax-deductible donation to Corpus Christi College. United States residents will receive a US tax receipt to maximize tax benefits in the donor’s country of residence.

  • Friends of Independent Schools and Better Education

Friends of Independent Schools and Better Education

FRISBE (Friends of Independent Schools and Better Education) is a licensed US non-profit organization that promotes and encourages educational institutions who emphasize scholarship, moral character, individual responsibility and initiative. Corpus Christi College and other Canadian independent schools benefit from Friends of Independent Schools and Better Education (FRISBE). FRISBE directs donor gifts to various independent schools within Canada.

FRISBE is a registered non-profit corporation in the United States and it will accept cheques only. Contributions and gifts to FRISBE, Federal Tax Number 91- 1216755, are deductible for federal income tax purposes to the full extent permitted by law.

Areas of Need

Catholic Higher Education is a vital feature of the Church’s mission and life.

The Synod of the Archdiocese of Vancouver stressed the importance of developing Catholic higher education institutions to meet the pressing needs of churches and schools for ministerial and professional development. Post-secondary Catholic liberal arts education contributes invaluably to developing the leaders of tomorrow who are reflective, life-long learners, able to address professional, social and spiritual challenges of our world today. In contrast to Catholic schools and to public post-secondary institutions, Catholic post-secondary colleges in British Columbia do not receive any government funding. Therefore, in addition to revenues from tuition, the Colleges must rely upon the steady help of supporters and donors who contribute to the operations and capital development requirements.

 AREAS OF NEED

  • Expand Scholarships and Bursaries offerings to meet the needs of a growing and diverse student population.
  • Provide ongoing Program and Faculty Development to deliver quality foundational education in the Catholic tradition and in-line with the messaging of Pope Francis.
  • Enhance personalized Quality Advising to students in support of their personal and career goals.
  • Implement Innovative and Flexible Program Delivery.
  • Improve and expand Capital infrastructure.

Undergraduate Liberal Arts Education

Corpus Christi Catholic College was founded in 2000 as a society for advanced Catholic education. The College provides a liberal arts education where young people can undertake their first two years of university, exploring liberal arts subjects of English, Philosophy, History and Religious Studies, Business and other courses in a faith-based transferable college program. The College offers transfer courses under the auspices of the British Columbia Association of Academic Transfer (BCAAT). This enables Corpus Christi students to transfer freely to the university of their choice for the final years of their undergraduate degrees. Additionally, the BC Ministry of Advanced Education recently awarded Corpus Christi College the ability to offer an Associate of Arts degree. This exciting new two-year degree program option was launched in September 2011.

Corpus Christi is focused on students. To attract and support young people from all walks of life who will develop and thrive as part of the Corpus Christi community, the College needs funds to provide essential scholarships and bursaries. We are working on improving services to students on all fronts. These efforts include upgrading technology, classrooms, and access to student advisors and activities. Funding is also needed for full time faculty appointments to broaden the course offerings. A core group of highly qualified faculty will also help Corpus Christi attract some of the brightest young people as they graduate from BC’s high schools. The most immediate staffing needs for Corpus Christi College are a Dean of Liberal Arts, the full time faculty members in the five Liberal Arts core areas: Religious Studies, Philosophy, English, History, and one area of specialization, and some support personnel.

By engaging first class lecturers on a part-time basis, Corpus Christi continues to offer a fairly wide range of courses in:
  • Humanities
Religious Studies, Philosophy, English, History, Film, Classical Studies, Latin American Studies, French, Spanish, Social Justice and Peace Studies
  • Business
  • Social Sciences
    Anthropology, Psychology, Political Science
  • Sciences
    Mathematics, Biology, and Physics

Corpus Christi College invites and directs students to excel in all areas of intellectual growth, including academics, personal virtue and service to others. It does this in large part due to our qualified and dedicated faculty and staff, engaging and dynamic instruction, strong student advisory support, and - for students enrolled in Theological Studies - access to a variety of programs and services of the University of British Columbia.

The integration of education with personal and spiritual development is also reflected in other areas of student academic life, including:
  • giving service learning opportunities both locally and abroad
  • providing supportive environments for discussing and debating important and complex issues of our time that demand critical thinking guided by faith and morals
  • directing students to make a difference in today’s world as ‘servant leaders’
  • inspiring students to make a hopeful and constructive contribution, and providing them with the necessary skills and tools to do so

Campus Ministry

The Campus Ministry of the Colleges has operated out of St. Mark’s for many years, and is a dynamic, evangelistic, and pastoral presence to the wider Catholic and non-Catholic community of the University of B.C. The Campus Ministry offers many programs and services, including: celebration of Sunday and weekday Eucharist; celebration of Reconciliation and other Sacraments; prayer and worship events and devotions; spiritual and pastoral support, retreats, discussions, lectures and presentations on various topics and themes. The Campus Ministry also is home to several Catholic groups and organizations, including the Newman Club, Development and Peace, and a student Knights of Columbus council. All of these programs are in great need of support.

Our Five-Year Vision

IMPROVEMENT OF THE COLLEGES’ FACILITIES ON CAMPUS to ENHANCE FURTHER GROWTH

In addition to enhancing operations of the two Colleges and the Campus Ministry Program, the Catholic Colleges will soon require the first of a two-phase capital development plan. This phase will expand the campus facilities through construction of a building adjoining the existing campus building. These new facilities will:
  • enhance delivery of course and program offerings
  • provide for student community building and activities
  • provide facilities that enable the Colleges to host diocesan and community programs and events
  • give a focus for Catholic intellectual life and activity

The first phase will feature a three-story building that will include Level I – Lecture Theatre, Common Student Life Center; Level II – two large classrooms, seminar/conference room, administration support; Level III – two large classrooms, seminar/conference room, roof terrace.

CONCLUSION

The Catholic Colleges of St. Mark’s and Corpus Christi have come a long way in establishing themselves as institutions of Catholic higher education in the Archdiocese of Vancouver and the province of British Columbia. Our success has been augmented by the extension of our geographical reach both locally – through programs such as “Running Start” in many of our Catholic high schools–and internationally–by including international students and service learning opportunities in Tanzania, Guatemala and Nicaragua. The growth and success of the Colleges are critical in the coming years. Strong Catholic faithbased educational support at the post-secondary level is needed more than ever as adults and our young people face social and educational environments that are characterized by increasing secularity. We ask for your support going forward as the need is great and our current operations have proven that our fiscal and business plan is manageable.

OVER THE NEXT FIVE YEARS, WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO

  • Develop major Theology program areas: Theology Studies; Religious Education; Pastoral Studies
  • Fund specific full-time faculty positions
  • Expand and develop core liberal arts program areas: Religious Studies, Philosophy, English, History
  • Provide generous undergraduate and graduate scholarships and bursaries to ensure that we continue to attract outstanding students and ensure that deserving students have the means to attend our Colleges
  • Hire communications personnel
  • Invest in Technology and Web development
  • Expand our recruitment programs
  • Develop specializations in offerings in scripture, ethics, and spirituality
  • Develop comprehensive advising programs
  • Expand and develop corollary program areas: Classical Studies, Business, French, Spanish, Social Justice and Peace Studies; the Social Sciences – Anthropology, Psychology, Political Science; the Sciences – Mathematics, Biology, Physics; Film
  • Develop systematic distance learning
  • Identify and implement an appropriate research and publications program
  • Implement the long awaited “Millennium Project” for the Dr. John Micallef Memorial Library
  • Implement the new Diaconate formation program of the Archdiocese of Vancouver
  • Develop and implement an appropriate doctoral degree program in Theology
  • Continue providing outstanding campus ministry outreach to the wider student and academic community. This includes ongoing support for the chaplaincy and staff position(s), sacramental and liturgical life, retreats, presentations and other events
  • Expand our facility, which features providing: a large theatre lecture hall, student activity center, and student residences

How Your Gift Helps

Contribute to Corpus Christi's distinctive mission

Scholarships and Bursaries

Many of our students benefit from financial aid from Corpus Christi College. These funds are in addition to loans and other forms of financial support. Your gift towards Scholarships and Bursaries eases the financial burden of our young scholars and helps realize their dreams as our next generation of leaders.

Programs

The enhancement of existing programs, the creation of new ones, and the overall foundational education in the liberal arts as being critical to an individual’s ability to learn, think, and express, all help address the needs of the rapidly changing world. In turn, students are better prepared to take on challenges and serve the society.

Educational Experience

Corpus Christi College’s distinctive mission is to educate the mind, body, and soul. To accomplish this, Corpus Christi College provides an educational experience that includes student and faculty collaborations both inside and outside of the classroom; outreach into the broader local community; experiential learning; engagement in campus life and activities; and leadership development. Gifts from your support provide these opportunities that enhance each of our students’ educational experience in their early post-secondary years.

technology, infrastructure, and building needs

To keep pace with new and developing instructional technology, infrastructure, and building needs, gifts support a campus environment that is conducive to learning inside and outside of the classrooms.

What your gift means to Corpus Christi

The philosophy of education sets Corpus Christi College apart from many public and secular universities and colleges. This type of education in the liberal arts is so critical because it provides the foundation for students to succeed in their university career. Because we are student focused and that we care deeply about the whole person, students build meaning relationships with their peer, with faculty and advisors, and with the broader community. Corpus Christi College ignites new areas of interest in our students, where they had not considered previously exploring. Many of our students leave the college well ahead of their peer.

Financial support opens the doors to so many opportunities over and above a basic education for our students. we ask that you make a meaningful gift of support to help grow our donation dollars to take Catholic higher education to the next level.

Our Unique Approach Works

Making a choice for your child’s post-secondary schooling can be both confusing and daunting. Corpus Christi has an excellent track record in providing a successful start to any student's university education, and offers the best of both worlds–a small campus that is just a few steps from the huge UBC campus and UBC offerings. In fact, our students enjoy exceptionally high transfer rates into second- and third-year programs at UBC, as well as other leading post-secondary institutions in BC, across Canada, and around the world.

We are committed to holistic student success and we believe in recognizing the dignity of every student in our diverse community. In our educational environment students can thrive in their studies, grow as individuals and define success for themselves. The 360 approach to student success supports the different aspects of student life. Our programs provide students with supports and resources to help them create the healthy balance that is right for them.

We are here for your child. We want them to thrive in college, not just survive college.

Investing in Success

We Invest in Student Success

Over the years, we have developed an effective and systematic approach to supporting our students to help them succeed in their university-level studies:

Student Success Program

An integrated set of information modules and workshops our students attend to get hands-on skills training and support in:
  • time management
  • note taking
  • critical thinking
  • research
  • academic writing
  • and more…

Supportive and enriching academic environment

  • Our faculty choose to teach at Corpus Christi because they’re passionate about their subject area and love teaching
  • Small classes and closer faculty interaction enable students to feel comfortable asking questions in class, approaching faculty members if they have questions, or taking the discussion deeper
  • Our faculty members challenge our students to achieve their very best and encourage students to pursue potential academic and career pathways

fair warning

  • If a student is struggling with a particular class, we have a system in place to provide an early warning that he or she may need more focussed support with organization, time management, academic writing, etc.
  • Parents are also notified if their child is struggling, giving the family a chance to help identify what’s going on and to offer support

Social integration

One of the key measures of student success is feeling a sense of belonging. We support the whole person and offer a strong orientation program, an integrated and vibrant student life program, clubs and activities, service learning opportunities, and leadership opportunities:
  • Office of Campus Life and Ministry
  • Clubs and activities
  • Opportunities to learn leadership skills
  • Service learning and community outreach opportunities
  • One-on-One Advising and referrals to counselling services

Why Choose Corpus Christi?

Our Location Offers the Best of Both Worlds

Small Campus Just Steps from UBC

We offer an intimate, student-centered campus, just steps from UBC. Along with formal classrooms, study halls, a computer lab, and a full library, we have informal student spaces for study and socializing, including a café and an outdoor plaza. Students who choose to reside at UBC are eligible to apply for residence at nearby Carey Hall or St. Andrew's Hall.

Corpus Christi College is located on the campus of Saint Mark’s College, which is officially affiliated with UBC. All of our full-time students are enrolled in a special course–focussing on research methods, study skills, academic writing, and more – offered by Saint Mark’s. This means our students are able to enjoy many of the services and amenities UBC has to offer, including membership in the Alma Mater Society (UBC Student Union), U-Pass, Health and Dental Insurance, access to UBC libraries, and more. Many of our students also supplement their Corpus Christi studies with UBC courses taken through Access Studies. It truly is the best of both worlds.

All of our courses are equivalent to those offered by other colleges and universities across Canada and the United States. Up to 60 credits taken at Corpus Christi can be directly transferred to most post-secondary institutions, and applied towards a future Bachelor’s degree at 4-year institution.

Students typically study with us for one or two years. We have been given the authority to grant two-year Associate of Arts Degrees to eligible students, which looks great on a resume and gives students a higher chance of gaining acceptance at their university of choice to complete their Bachelor’s degree. Along with our rigorous academic programs, Corpus offers opportunities in community outreach, service learning, and leadership development. Within the College’s nurturing community, our students become leaders both in the classroom and in the world.

(Cleaning supplies, shampoo, toilet paper, furnishings, etc...)
    • Entertainment
    • Other expenses
    (Laundry, insurance, etc...)

What is Corpus Christi's connection to UBC?

Full-time Corpus Christi students can access many of the services and benefits UBC offers its students through our  affiliation agreement. Students receive UBC Library Cards, U-Pass Bus Passes and can participate in UBC intramurals, UBC clubs, and use UBC Student Services such as Student Health and Counseling.

Some Corpus Christi students are also UBC students. Many Corpus Christi students enroll and take courses at UBC through Access Studies or as Visiting Students to UBC. Many UBC students also take courses at Corpus Christi to take advantage of our small class sizes and courses not available through UBC. Many of our instructors are also UBC instructors who have chosen to teach courses at Corpus Christi in addition to their regular UBC classes. These factors result in an easy transition from college life to the larger universities, especially UBC.

3

How are the courses different from those taught at other universities and colleges?

Corpus Christi College is first and foremost a student-centered college where instructors understand the value of teaching in a smaller, seminar-style setting. Our class sizes average about 20 students, permitting the instructors to work more closely with every student. They are available to students outside of the classroom and encourage students to use their office hours. The personal attention students receive at Corpus Christi results in a greater understanding of course material and hence, better student performance.

4

Can I transfer from another post-secondary institution?

Applicants who have earned at least 24 transferable credits from other recognized post-secondary institutions will be considered transfer students; entrance GPA will be calculated solely on these transfer credits. Students with 23 or fewer credits will be evaluated for admission based on both high school and post-secondary transcripts.
Our Requirements

5

Can student only transfer to UBC after leaving Corpus Christi?

No. In addition to UBC, our students have successfully transferred to SFU, McGill, Queen's, University of Toronto, University of Victoria, Emily Carr University, Bishop's University, Saint Francis Xavier, La Sorbonne (France), Osake University (Japan), and others.

6

Am I eligible for financial aid, awards and student loans?

Corpus Christi has one of the most generous financial aid programs in the province. This year money will be given to students through scholarships, bursaries and work study opportunities. Detailed information on specific scholarships is available on our website. Students attending Corpus Christi College are also eligible for government and bank student loan programs.

Do you have to be Catholic or Christian to attend Corpus Christi College?

No, students from various backgrounds attend Corpus Christi. Our Campus Life & Ministry Office provides opportunities for all students to take part in campus life. If you are interested in exploring your life as a Catholic or Christian, we are committed to supporting you as you develop and investigate your faith. Because of our dynamic program, most students will choose to take part in events that help them to celebrate their Christian faith and Catholicity.

All student activities are voluntary. We are committed to diversity and respect religious liberty, and we are also very proud of our Catholic foundation and character. Please call us if you have any further questions about faith development at Corpus Christi.

Is religious education a requirement of the College?

Corpus Christi College offers a strong foundation in the Liberal Arts, and part of the Arts and Humanities curriculum at any university is Religious Studies. We encourage students to learn more about religion, history, philosophy and literature. In Religious Studies we currently offer courses in Christian History, Islamic History and World Religions. They are not required courses, but are very popular with our students.

  • Student Athletes

Athletes selected to be part of a UBC Varsity reserve or practice roster (“red shirt”) now have the option of attending Corpus Christi College, located just steps from the UBC Campus.
We support our students with a seamless transition from high school, tangible resources, and skills building:
    • Small classes: Our average class size is approximately 20, and the majority of our classes have fewer than 35 students. This means professors get to know students by name, and are often able to offer one-on-one guidance.
    • Academic support: Dedicated study space, peer tutors, and academic skills building offered by our Centre for Academic Development.
    • Dedicated advising support and program planning: All of our students are assigned their own academic advisor for individual attention.
    • Fair warning: If a student is struggling with a particular class, we have a system in place to provide an early warning that he or she may need more focused support with organization, time management, academic writing, and other academic skills
    • Social support: They can also access our Campus Life and Ministry team for personal, spiritual, and social support.
    • Flexible admissions and summer programs:We offer year-round admissions and summer classes students can elect to take during summer training camp.
